Halogen Free Flame Retardant Coil Pipes Light Series Pipes

The term halogen refers to the elements fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I) and At, which are located in Group 7A of the periodic table. These elements are often used in various plastic raw material compounds due to their flame retardant properties. However, halogens can release toxic and corrosive gases during a fire, which can lead to undesirable consequences in terms of safety and the environment.

    Raw Materials Containing Halogen
    • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): It contains chlorine and is one of the most commonly used plastics. It is especially used in construction and electrical cables.
    • PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride):Contains fluorine and is generally preferred in applications requiring high temperature and chemical resistance.
    • CPE (Chlorinated Polyethylene): It contains chlorine and is often used for fire-resistant materials and coatings.
    • Neoprene (Polychloroprene): This chlorinated plastic is often used in cable sheaths and seals.
    Halogen-Free Plastic Raw Materials
    • PE (Polyethylene): It does not contain halogen. It is widely used in the outer sheath of cables and pipes.
    • PP (Polypropylene): It is halogen-free and is often used in pipes, containers and packaging materials.
    • PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): It is halogen-free and widely used for bottles, textile fibers and packaging.
    • PA (Polyamide – Nylon): It is halogen-free and used in automotive, textile and industrial applications.
    • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene): It contains fluorine but has a special condition. Although it is halogenated, it is not flammable and does not release toxic gas.
    • PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate):It is halogen-free and used in high-performance applications such as electronics and automotive parts.

Halogen-free plastics are preferred for environmental and safety reasons as they release less caustic and environmentally friendly gases during a fire.

The EN 60754-2 standard is entitled “Testing of Gases Emitted During Combustion Used in Cables – Part 2: Determination of Conductivity and Measurement of Conductivity (pH)”. Although this standard is primarily intended for cables, it can sometimes be applied to other plastic products such as pipes. This is because the test can be performed on a 1 gram sample and the general structure of plastic-based products has similar properties.

The testing process generally consists of the following stages:
    • *Sample Preparation: A sample is taken from the cable or pipe.
    • *Combustion: The sample is burned in a controlled combustion chamber.
    • *Gas Collection: The gases released during combustion are collected and analyzed.
    • *Analysis: The collected gases are evaluated for halogen content and acidic components.

This method is of critical importance in terms of safety and environmental protection, especially when using halogen-free and acid-free materials. This standard is widely used in the production of cables and similar plastic products for fire safety and to minimize environmental impacts.
